Information
on opening accounts can be obtained from
our staff at Chennai office or London office.
Also visit http://www.bba.org.uk
for information related to opening a bank
account. We do not recommend that you try
to transfer an account from India to a bank
in UK this is complicated by differences
in checking procedures and banking laws.
The UK has a national banking system, the
main banks have branches in and around the
city, and near to university campus. Find
a bank, which is near to the place where
you will be studying or living. The bank
will ask you to produce:
The original letter of acceptance from the
University; this should be addressed to
your permanent home (this is necessary to
prove your status as a student.)
Your passport
Proof of your address in the UK
A letter from your sponsor (your family
or funding body) confirming funding
A letter of introduction from your own bank
with a recent bank statement (if possible)
Before you arrive you can set up a preliminary
account over the Internet with one of the
main banks: Barclays, HSBC, Halifax, Lloyds,
Natwest, Royal Bank of Scotland. This should
cut down on the time required to open a
bank account when you arrive.Banks have
various types of accounts the main ones
being current and deposit. A current account
normally provides you with a chequebook,
cheque guarantee card and a cash card, which
is particularly useful since it gives you
access to 24 hours automatic cash dispensers
(Service Tills).
