The
National Health Service (NHS) provides free
and subsidised treatment for people who
live in the UK. As an international student,
you may be entitled to NHS treatment if
you are:
Enrolled on a course lasting for six months
or more
Enrolled on a full-time course in Scotland,
no matter how long it lasts.
Regardless
of residential status or nationality, emergency
treatment received at General Practitioner
(GP) surgeries or in Accident and Emergency
departments is free of charge. This exemption
from charges ceases to apply when a patient
is formally admitted as an in-patient or
registered at an outpatient clinic.
Registering
with a Doctor:
Students
are advised to register with a doctor immediately
on their arrival to the UK. If your institution
has a residence doctor you can register
there. If not, you should register with
a doctor close to your accommodation. Your
institution may be able to offer help in
registering. Alternatively, a list of local
doctors can be had from local post office.
You
should always make an appointment with your
doctor first, before going for consultation
for your medical complaint. A General Practitioner
may refer you to a specialist, if necessary.
For
any emergency or to request an ambulance
service, dial 999. This is always free.
